Chinese companies currently cannot purchase advanced chipsets from companies like Nvidia. The Biden administration could restrict block US-based cloud providers from supplying their services to Chinese companies, the Wall Street Journal reported. These new restrictions could curb American cloud providers like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft from selling cloud access to AI developers in China. Chinese companies could still train complex AI programs by renting resources from the likes of AWS or Microsoft, both of which offer cloud services in China and compete with Chinese cloud providers like Alibaba. The White House, Commerce Department, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Some Redditors said they'll no longer use the site after third-party app Apollo shut down. A popular third-party Reddit app shut down Friday – and some of the social network's users are pledging to walk away as a result. The app, which let Redditors access the platform through its own interface, had more than 1.5 million monthly users in June, Selig said, citing data from analytics firm Mixpanel. The Canadian developer previously said Reddit's demands for compensation were unreasonable compared with how much money Apollo made from paid subscriptions. They allege they were let go as a union movement among Google contractors began to make inroads. The Alphabet Workers Union has filed a new complaint on Friday with the National Labor Relations Board against Google and its contractor Cognizant on behalf of three contract YouTube TV workers who were terminated. But Google told Insider that the layoffs occurred because it ended the YouTube TV contract. Mencini also said the company has "had many contracts with unionized suppliers and have no objection to Cognizant workers organizing or joining a union." Insider also previously reported that the AWU claims that Cognizant held meetings with YouTube TV contractors where they repeated anti-union talking points.

During the pandemic, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he envisioned remote work sticking around for good. After recent layoffs, however, he changed his tune, saying remote workers were less productive. Apple, Amazon, and Snap are just a few others that have said workers must return to the office, causing consternation among some of their employees. Several current employees spoke to Insider about the reversal of Meta's remote work policy. As companies become anxious about slowing growth and a tighter economic climate, layoffs and eliminating remote work are strategies executives are implementing to try and boost productivity.

Tech companies are cutting costs in certain areas to focus spending on AI. See how much tech companies pay employees specializing in AI. However, one area where tech companies are investing is artificial intelligence. Google and other Big Tech giants are competing for talent against new entrants, most notably OpenAI, which created the AI chatbot ChatGPT and is one of today's hottest rising tech companies. Because of this, talented engineers with AI skills can command big salaries, despite tech workers having less power now than in recent history.

Called the Vision Pro, the $3,499 headset is Apple's vision for the future of personal computing. Apple on Monday held its annual WWDC keynote, where the company unveiled its much-anticipated mixed-reality headset that it's calling the Vision Pro. Regardless, the Vision Pro represents Apple's vision for the future of personal computers. But perhaps the Vision Pro with its signature Apple build quality and iOS integration is what the AR/VR industry needed all along to go mainstream. Below are the most interesting Vision Pro features:

Google has opposed a shareholder's call for more transparency around its algorithms. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the potential of new generative AI and added safety is essential. Google's parent company Alphabet opposed a shareholder proposal that sought increased transparency surrounding its algorithms. It argued that accountability and transparency in artificial intelligence are needed if the technology is to remain safe to society. Google in its opposition to the proposal said that it already provides meaningful disclosures surrounding its algorithms, including through websites that provide overviews of how YouTube's algorithms sort content, for instance.

Google invented AI technology like the Transformer, which led to breakthroughs in the chatbot race. Essentially, outside researchers gain access to a piece of AI technology from Google and continue iterating on it, which in turn benefits Google's own products. Several experts in patent law spoke to Insider about Google's AI patents, namely why it hasn't used them against competitors and whether it even could. Technical and legal questions aside, it would be somewhat hypocritical for Google to sue anyone for infringing its AI patents. Patent warsLegal experts pointed to the idea of "mutually assured destruction" to explain why tech companies would file patents without enforcing them offensively.

The app quickly rocketed up to the top of the iOS App Store charts. Last week, OpenAI launched an iPhone app for ChatGPT that quickly shot to the top of the App Store. And yet, it will likely make hundreds of millions of dollars a year from this technology, while basically doing nothing. None of that is stopping Apple from offering the service to users through its App Store and reaping a profit on subscription sales. OpenAI is not doing that, perhaps because the process is a bit more clunky than using Apple's built-in payment processor.
Former Googler Chelsey Glasson acknowledges that the recent tech downturn could stifle dissent from people who may face pregnancy discrimination. She's speaking about her experiences in a book she is publishing called "Black Box: A Pregnancy Discrimination Memoir." In addition, 1 in 5 mothers said they experienced pregnancy discrimination in the workplace. One change that could help the industry would be some means of making funding available for people suing over pregnancy discrimination, she added. "Black Box: A Pregnancy Discrimination Memoir" will be published on August 29.
See how much Amazon paid employees across the AWS business in 2022. Amazon Web Services' hiring has hit a low point. Insider combed data from that office, which authorizes hiring non-US employees and then publicly releases the data. Insider sorted through the hundreds of disclosed salaries that represent engineers, product managers, and more, to find out what the cloud giant was paying employees last year. Here's a breakdown of what AWS paid its developers, product managers, analysts, and other key roles through the end of 2022:
Workers in Austin recently formed a collective bargaining group with the Alphabet Workers Union. The move comes shortly after a group of Cognizant workers supporting YouTube Music voted 41-0 in favor of unionizing with the Alphabet Workers Union, which is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America, a larger trade union. The cuts did not impact the YouTube Music team, which helps curate themed playlists and review song metadata. The Cognizant team supporting YouTube TV had been in early talks to form their own union following the group at YouTube Music, according to three workers there. Cognizant also confirmed in an email that its contract supporting YouTube TV is ending.
Google told staff it will be more selective about the research it publishes. Recently, information like code and data has become accessible on a "much more on a need-to-know" basis, according to a Google AI staffer. LaMDA, a chatbot technology that forms the basis of Bard, was originally built as a 20 percent project within Google Brain. (The company has historically allowed employees to spend 20% of their working days exploring side projects that might turn into full-fledged Google products.) Google's AI division has faced other setbacks.
Jack Dorsey said Elon Musk had been the "only alternative" to Twitter falling into the wrong hands. Twitter would "never" have survived as a public company, the former CEO said on Bluesky. Jack Dorsey said Elon Musk was the "only alternative" to Twitter being taken over by "Wall Street activists" even if he didn't turn out as the "best possible" leader for the company. But in response to a question from Insider's Thomas Maxwell, Dorsey said: "The company would have never survived as a public company. Would you rather have had it owned by hedge funds and Wall Street activists?"
Contact workers who support YouTube Music won their union election 41-0. Contract workers who support YouTube Music have won their union election and will now prepare to bargain for a labor contract. The Alphabet Workers Union launched in 2021 and represents both full-time workers employed directly by Google as well as its large contract workforce. Some Google contractors can command high salaries, while many — like those at Cognizant — make as little as $19 an hour. The YouTube Music contractors initially began organizing to seek a guaranteed work-from-home policy, saying that it's too expensive to live in Austin on the wages offered.
